2016 Awards & Screening

All entries will first be screened to ensure they meet the entry criteria, theme, and content requirements outlined in our Entry Video Checklist and Contest Rules.



Our panel of judges will score your video based the criteria described below — including creativity, content, fit with our theme & mission and more.

(1) First-Round judges who select Semi-Finalists
(2) Semi-Finals Round judges who choose Finalists and recommend Special Awards Nominees
(3) Finals Round judges who select Winners & Special Awards Winners




The top 2+ finalists per division will be selected based on those who have the highest judges’ scores, per the criteria below.  Additional teams may be selected as “Special Award Nominees” based on jury decisions.

Another way Semi-Finalists can make it is through our ONLINE Public Vote Challenge, where all Semi-Finalists and their videos participate in, often drawing viewership around the world   The public will determine the Audience’s Choice Award winner per national division, and the one top vote-getter per division shall receive an automatic Finalist slot, where they earn a trip to the YVOC Festival and Awards Gala.



Final Round Judges will select the national, regional and special award winners. Videos may be screened in whole or in part.



Your entry will be scored according to the following criteria:


1.  Meets Contest Criteria & Theme – (10% of score)

  • Clearly addresses theme
  • Presents a personal perspective of a desired trip or past trip experience
  • Inspires youth and others to travel to China by being engaging and informative?
2.  Originality & Impact  (30% of score)

  • Degree of originality and uniqueness in its personal perspective
  • Did the story personally move you or inspire you?
  • Replay Value:  Is this a video you’d replay over and over?
  • Does it have the potential to spark dialogue and sharing?
  • Did the storytelling format/approach work for telling a coherent story?
3. Editing (30% of score)

  • Does each scene, every cut, every transition, sound effect(s), graphic(s) and other creative techniques help to tell a greater story?
  • Does your video’s tone, structure, and pacing enhance its effectiveness and the emotional impact for the audience?

4.  Video Quality & Production Values (30% of score)

  • Does the video have strong production values —  quality audio/sound, quality lighting?
  • Camera stability & focus
  • Clean titles and if applicable, subtitles?
Other Bonus Judging Criteria that May Be Used For Other Potential Awards:

  • If produced in Mandarin language by a non-native speaker, the quality of Mandarin skills
  • Best Birding video – based on content
  • Best in Category – “Discovering Your Roots,” “Making An Impact,” “Unforgettable Memory, and “Follow Your Passions”
