Video Subject & Artist Statement (this may be publicly posted): To promote a better relationship between the United States and China, I encourage the President to support programs such as the Academy for Creative Media’s Student Media Art Exchange Program (SMART Exchange). The SMART Exchange Program brings together student filmmakers from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and Shanghai University to collaborate on film projects in Shanghai and Honolulu. As a participant from the University of Hawaiʻi in the 2015 SMART Exchange Program, I witnessed the formation of lifelong friendships between students through the sharing of perspectives on storytelling and filmmaking. Cultural exchange programs like SMART Exchange build international relationships on a foundation of education and collaboration and it would be a benefit to both nations to produce more of these cultural exchange programs.
